Basic Introduction
“I got interested in knife making after seeing a forging demo in 2011, only years later did the stars align and I made my first knife at the end of 2018.
It was slow going at first using only the most basic hand tools, but with time I’ve build up the machines and tools that now help me make knives.
What started as a curiosity turned into a passion and every knife that leaves my shop is a product of that passion to create a functional piece of art.
When possible I partake in challenges such as the yearly 48 Hour Dagger Build.
Every challenge I push myself to take on a project outside my comfort zone. Whether I succeed or fail, I learn from it and apply that knowledge to improve the quality of my work.”
Favourite Steel
Although I use 1070 and 5160 for the majority of my knives due to their versatility I occasionally make my own San Mai or use Stainless Steel such as L4528/N690 when corrosion resistance is an important factor.
Favourite Handle Materials
“Natural hardwoods will always be one of my favorites, specifically African hardwoods.
I like using materials with character, anything that will make a knife one of a kind.
Combining synthetics with those found in nature often lead me to unique creations with a “”modern meets rustic”” look.”
Signature product
Big camping and outdoor choppers, Kwaiken neck knives, Serbian cleavers and the occasional dagger.
Technical
“I both carry my own knives and test them in real world conditions making sure they perform as intended.
I use only quality materials from reputable suppliers other than those reclaimed for a specific purpose such as wrought iron or hardwood. Reclaimed materials are inspected to ensure no defects are present that could compromise quality.
All heat treatment of carbon steel is done in house while stainless steel is sent out to a third party with the appropriate facilities.
Each knife comes with a certificate of authenticity indicating materials used as well as care instructions.”
The future
“In the short term I want to ensure that each knife is better than the last.
In the long run I would like to one day join the Knifemakers Guild of South Africa.”
